What is “Parts Work” or Internal Family Systems Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based practice that treats a variety of mental health challenges, improves self-esteem, and establishes an inner sense of calmness and clarity.

Although “family” is in the name, IFS isn’t family therapy. IFS is all about understanding your inner parts and how they connect within a system (similar to a family).

In IFS, the overarching idea is that there are “no bad parts.” However, some parts act in ways that block or harm our core Self, causing significant emotional pain.

Understanding the Internal Family Systems Model

IFS assumes that we all carry multiple parts playing multiple roles. These parts often emulate sub-personalities, driving you to act in specific ways. This explains why we sometimes engage in behaviors that are problematic or why insight doesn’t always lead to direct change.

The IFS model is non-pathologizing. Its founder, Richard Schwartz, even published a book titled No Bad Parts to emphasize that every part plays a role. Parts aren’t bad but are wounded and often take on inappropriate roles.

Mental health professionals who practice IFS aim to heal wounded parts and help clients build a conscious connection to their inner Self.

What Is Self-Leadership?

Your Self represents your core. When you’re in your core Self, you feel curious, calm, confident, and compassionate. Life isn’t necessarily easier, but you are grounded in who you are and trust your self-leadership.

Many of us don’t act from self-leadership. Instead, fragmented parts dominate the core Self and dictate how we act and feel. Over time, we may feel controlled by these parts and lose trust in our core Self.

Types of Parts

IFS therapists focus on how parts interfere with accessing the core Self. Even though the Self has positive intent, parts have intense needs that feel larger than life.

Exiles

Exiles are the youngest and most wounded parts of the system. They often hold primitive memories and are associated with childhood trauma.

Exiles appear needy or childish because they are stuck in the past. They carry emotional pain but also hold keys to positive traits, including creativity, spontaneity, and joyfulness.

Managers

Managers are proactive and attempt to keep the internal system safe by minimizing anxiety.

Healthy managers help with daily responsibilities, basic routines, and social norms. Dysfunctional managers, however, can be hyper-controlling, perfectionistic, or highly critical, leading to people-pleasing and self-judgment.

Firefighters

Firefighters are reactive parts that step in when exiles show up. Their main goal is to extinguish emotional pain through actions like bingeing, overworking, substance use, or avoidance.

Over time, firefighters can take extreme measures until the wounded parts they protect are healed.

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

IFS therapy increases awareness of the parts that need attention and compassion. It separates exiles from managers and firefighters and encourages curiosity about their roles.

The goal is to honor each part’s needs and build new relationships with them. You cannot erase your parts—they are protective—but you can heal them, gain self-leadership, and foster emotional wellness.

How Long Does IFS Therapy Take?

IFS is generally a longer-term therapy model. Initial sessions may feel uncomfortable as exiles are accessed and managers or firefighters take over.

This discomfort is normal. Working through it allows for lasting transformation and greater emotional freedom.

What Types of Issues Does IFS Treat?

IFS can benefit anyone who struggles with behaviors that harm their well-being. It is especially helpful for people who want a depth-oriented therapy approach.

Trauma

IFS helps clients access exiled parts and process trauma-related feelings, beliefs, and bodily sensations.

Compulsive Behaviors

Managers and firefighters may drive compulsive behaviors to distract from pain. IFS helps reorient these parts to healthier coping mechanisms.

Relationship Problems

IFS fosters self-regulation and emotional awareness, improving trust and communication in relationships.

Depression

Depression often stems from overactive managers and negative self-beliefs. IFS encourages self-compassion and gentler internal dialogue.

Anxiety

Anxiety may emerge from overactive managers. IFS helps soothe anxious parts and reduce hypervigilance.
