Back to school stress is not just for kids

A September reset for parents carrying work and family responsibilities

The school year has started, but your household may still be finding its rhythm. There are forms to sign, lunches to organise, work deadlines to meet and a child whose day does not end when the final bell rings. By evening, there may be very little energy left for you.

September can be demanding for parents as well as children. You do not need to reach a breaking point before asking for support. A useful starting point is to notice what feels hardest, reduce one pressure where possible and make room for a conversation about your own well-being.

Look beyond the calendar

Sometimes the visible task is only part of the load. Getting a child to school may also involve thinking about friendships, learning needs, school communication or whether they feel understood. Meanwhile, you may be trying to appear fully available at work.

Ask yourself a more specific question than “Am I coping?” Try “What part of the day am I dreading?” The answer might be the morning rush, the homework conversation or the quiet moment when you finally stop and notice how tired you are. A clear answer gives you somewhere to begin.

Make one part of the week lighter

Choose a change that is small enough to try this week. That could mean repeating a simple dinner, moving a non-urgent appointment or asking another adult to take ownership of school emails for a few days. Be specific about what help would look like and when you need it.

If another adult is sharing the household, include the planning as well as the task. “Could you organise Thursday’s pickup and let the school know?” transfers more responsibility than “Can you help me on Thursday?” If you are parenting alone, consider which expectations can be lowered and which trusted supports are realistically available.

Give children a way to tell you what helps

For a neurodivergent child or teen, a busy school day may involve demands that other people do not see. Avoid assuming that every child needs the same after-school routine. Ask whether they would prefer a snack, quiet time, movement or a little company before discussing school.

You might say, “We don’t have to talk about the whole day. Was there one part that felt easier or harder?” A young person may prefer writing, texting or talking while doing something else. Their communication preferences can be part of the conversation with a counsellor too.

CAMH’s back-to-school resources encourage conversations about mental health and support for families during the transition. [1]

Know when another conversation could help

If worry, conflict or exhaustion keeps interfering with everyday life, counselling can provide a place to explore what is happening and what you would like to change. You can seek support for yourself even when your child’s needs first prompted the enquiry. Parent counselling and a child’s counselling are different services with different goals; ask which would fit your situation.

At Clear Water Integrated Health, we offer counselling for adults, children, youth and families, including support for neurodivergent clients. Ask us about in-person appointments in Burlington and virtual options. A first conversation can focus on fit, without requiring you to explain everything at once. [2] [3]

Check whether your work benefits can help

Open your benefits booklet or insurer’s app and look for coverage for a Registered Social Worker. If the appointment is for your child, confirm dependent eligibility and any age limits. Ask about reimbursement limits, referral requirements and whether the specific clinician is eligible under your plan. Coverage for one family member or service does not automatically mean coverage for another.

You can bring questions about our services and clinician credentials to a free consultation. Your insurer confirms what your plan will reimburse.
